Some thoughts from the interview

“We started in 1981 with a bricks and mortar store. We went through the good times and the bad times and back to the good times again. About 8 years ago we decided to give online a shot which took off, it got very good. Irish people got used to it but I don’t think it has reached its’ full potential in this country by any means, it’s probably a lot bigger in the U.K. but there is still a lot of potential in this country so we are studying it.”

“We offer free nationwide delivery. We sell everything from single mattresses to super king mattresses, we sell suites of furniture, tables and chairs, bedroom collections and basically cover the house from top to bottom.”

“If you’re going to do something, do it, and do it right” Roisin from F.R. Cathcart Ltd

Roisin from F.R. Cathcart Ltd is a special person I helped way back set up their now booming eCommerce website, and have massively progressed since then and I hope will continue to do so! The F.R. Cathcart Ltd business started 40 years ago as a brick and mortar store in Northern Ireland and they supply everything from home and garden to hardware and building supplies. The store mainly sold building supplies until the credit crunch occurred, so as a family business they decided to diversify what they offered and delved into more a of a lifestyle store.

Some thoughts from the interview

“I am in the business about 5 years and we were set up as a timber importer, we progressed on to hardware, building supplies and general “stuff”. Things were going really well as were most builder suppliers but then the well-advertised credit crunch occurred so we as a family business had a look around and identified a need to diversify our offering. So we got into the lifestyle side of the market, we now have a garden centre, a coffee shop, a big gift ware range and we focus a lot on paint and home décor and have a few aspirational paint brands.”

“We started to look at our typical customer and our typical customer ended up being a lot like me. I have 2 young children, I work full time and my husband works full time and we don’t have a lot of time to go shop. We made this realisation and the topic of website of things had come up.”

Some thoughts from the interview

“The business started very slowly to begin with. I was working 3 days a week in a facilities managing role which I was hating, my husband wasn’t very happy in the job he had and we kept looking at each other and thinking we really need to do something. We had been talking about setting up our own business but being quite risk adverse so we just delayed and delayed.”

“We took some money from the credit card and we invested in some fabrics and linked up with other businesses and other factories and basically worked really hard to set up the business.”

Some thoughts from the interview

“We started the business, the first order was the 14th of Janurary 2012. We originally set it to be completely online business operating 100% from our website. We then found out what the potential was with eBay and we quickly opened a shop and that grew from strength to strength. We decided to join Amazon in 2014.”

“The potential hasn’t really been reached for us in Amazon but we know the potential is there.”
