“If you have sales you can overcome most problems, if you have the best plan in the world and no sales that’s insurmountable” Daniel from Shellac Nails

Daniel started Shellac Nails in November 2012 with help from an Enterprise Ireland New Frontiers Course which works with start-ups. Initially planning to supply medical statistical data to global pharmaceutical companies. He had a talent for sourcing products from external markets and with a hint that Shellac Gel was the next best thing to hit the market, Daniel took the plunge to start his own Shellac Nails business.

Some thoughts from the interview

“We started in November 2012. I was an actually on an enterprise Ireland new frontiers course which works with start-ups and if you have a start-up idea you can progress and get finance.”

“The start-up we were working on was actually to supply medical statistical data to global pharmaceutical companies, so you can see the connection between that and gel nail polish.”

Some thoughts from the interview

“It was by accident really. I started on eBay just trying to supplement my income when I was working full time selling odds and ends”

“It started off by popping into the pound shops and having a look to see if there was anything on the shelves that looked more than a pound but that was just for a tiny bit of pocket money really.”

Some thoughts from the interview

“We are an online retailer of murder mystery games, gifts and accessories.”

“We got into it by chance. I was hoping to run a coffee shop. I decided to leave work and I thought, I know! I’ll run a coffee shop because I am really good at cooking. We decided that we had no money so we went to a bank and they said that we needed a deposit of a ridiculous amount which we didn’t have.”

Some thoughts from the interview

“We’ve had a hardware store in Crumlin village, Expert Hardware Crumlin for the last 20 years. 6 years ago we decided that we needed to look into different avenues, generate some different income streams. Online was one that we looked closely at and to be honest initially when we looked at it we wondered how suitable it would be for a local hardware store, how much business we would actually generate from an online store. We kind of had the view that maybe as a catalogue it might be very helpful for us for bigger items instead of saying to people we can order this which would be a classic line in a hardware store as it is very difficult to carry everything. We would be able to point and say here is what we can order here, here’s what it is, there’s the dimension, that’s the price and it will be into to you in 2 to 3 days or whatever. So as a catalogue to help our customers in store.”

“The way it has transpired is it is nearly a standalone business itself the website and with that it brings a lot of problems and a lot of extra business.”
