In this three-part video series, I will tell you what SEO is and why it is so important for your ecommerce website and essential to making more sales.

So, what is SEO and why is it so important? Well, Search Engine Optimisation or SEO in short, is a set of rules/best practice that can be followed by web site (or blog) owners to optimize their web sites for search engines and thus improve their search engine rankings.

It’s really important for the long term so that you’re easily found for the search queries that matter to your business and you aren’t relying heavily on AdWords or Shopping Campaigns.

There are some problems that we need to be aware of:

1. SEO is so hard to quantify when its outsourced to other agencies so you need a concrete report if your wanting to get the most of it.

2. SEO best practice changes from time to time, as Google have 2 reasons for this:

a. If SEO companies new all the tricks to getting to the top of search all the time then it would be manipulated by big business to constantly make sure they are always number one. That’s not good for business, neither for the end user especially if it results in you clicking on the search result and it’s not relevant to your query nor Google, as test business would never spend money advertising.

b. Also Google want us to spend money on ads so if SEO was a perfect science we would never need to spend anything on AdWords.

So what are the buzz words right now in SEO:

It’s all about connectivity social sharing, video etc. It’s also all about mobile friendly sites as mobile continues to grow if you are presented a website through search results that is old, stale, not optimised for mobile not speedy, you will leave as an end user. If all that is in your website is stale it bods badly for google users get upset and won’t want to use it, and for google they need the audience there for us to spend money on advertising etc. This will probably change too as time goes on.

There are 2 types of SEO which we will look at more in depth in the next 2 videos:

– Onsite SEO the stuff you do within your website.

– Offsite SEO; the stuff you do of your website on other sites that link back to yours such as your Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs etc.

The more relevant the website that quotes your site the better.

As an ecommerce seller, you have to have a plan in place for SEO. Some of this you can do yourself, other bits and bobs you’ll need help from other retailers.
