Andrew runs Engineers Mate with 3 other directors, starting in 2011 the eCommerce business is relatively new, they have 2 branches; one in Dudley and one in Halford, they also have 2 trade counters as well as trading on multi-channel platforms such as eBay, Amazon and their own website. Starting with their first order on 28th August 2012 they planned for the business to be completely online on their website, but then delved into eBay and Amazon to expand their eCommerce dominance.
Some thoughts from the interview
“The potential hasn’t been reached [Amazon], but we know the potential is there”
“The more you do sell and the more revenue that goes through PayPal 25% is dropped”
“60-70% of people leave feedback on eBay and 10% leave feedback on Amazon”
“We have 3 people in the warehouse that ship out around 250 parcels a day”
“I like things coming through our website as there are no fees”
“Amazon really do call you out if don’t have the items in stock”
“Were looking into [Fulfillment by Amazon] so we don’t have to ship everything ourselves”
“In a couple of months you realise a selling trend and from there you realise what you have to do”
“You need to have the account systems, stock management, because without this I can’t possibly see how it could operate”
“Someone from Australia was in the Ministry of Defence and he ended up spending a significant amount of money”
“The power of the internet is that even when you’re sleeping its running 24/7”
“Even 3 years down the line we work 80-90 hours a week and will continue to do so until we get the business at the level we want it to”
“No one else will do it for you, there’s no substitute for hard work”
“You can have the best website in the world, but if no one can find it you may as well not have one”
“It’s crucial you get the data right, the details. Don’t copy off someone else’s Google, make it unique”
“There’s no quick fix to SEO, you have to keep working at it with time and effort”
“Don’t jump into it, find out how eBay and Amazon work, listings, shipping, stock levels, costs etc.”
Best advice: “You have to work hard, nothing will be handed to you on a plate”
