Chris from MyBadgeApp had a day to day job but decided to plunge onto making a side eBay business for some extra cash, starting from purchasing a £100 badge maker and some tough work, he now has over 30,000 total sales. Ranging from nearly every type of button design available Chris runs a successful eCommerce business. He made his eBay store in 2005 but didn’t actively use it for his MyBadgeApp business until 2012 to the point where he takes 1000 orders a month easily.

Some thoughts from the interview

“I started on eBay to supplement my income when I was working full time selling odds and ends“

“My wife said why don’t you make something? Because the overhead is a lot cheaper than buying ready made products”

“I thought of something cheap to make and cheap to sell, but if you sell enough you will make a hefty profit”

“I tried to stay within certain categories, and then just expand within those categories e.g. themes”

“It’s supposed to be a quick process going to eBay, looking for a badge, then buying it and coming out again”

“If you spend too much time looking for what you’re looking for you might give up in the end”

“I’ve got to make sure the customer is happy because it’s not worth arguing over 2 pounds”

“Customer feedback is more important than a few pounds here or there”

“There’s a social web shop on my Facebook so they can buy straight from my Facebook page”

“If you don’t time yourself well things won’t go out and people won’t be happy“

“I’m always thinking of doing new things, but it would have to fit around my current job”

“It’s hard to tell how busy you are going to be, so taking on other people is a risk”

“I never had a plan from the beginning, a certain amount of luck is involved”

Guest Advice :

“If you have something people want then they will start coming in, don’t just try it for a couple of months and give up”

“Don’t throw too much at it at the start. Take it slow to begin with, as there is competition out there”
